Money, prices and costs

Cost of living in Prague
In most bars, restaurants and shops, food and drink costs are roughly half the price of Western European countries, although prices are increasing.

Currency in Prague
The currency in Prague is the Czech Crown (czk). The Czech Republic expects to join the Euro in 2010.

The Euro is accepted in some hotels and restaurants, along with certain international shops. However, we recommend holding Czech Crowns, as the majority of establishments will only accept the local currency.

Banknotes come in the following denominations: 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 & 5000.

Credit cards
Credit cards are accepted in almost all hotels and international shops. Many small shops and restaurants accept credit cards, but not all. Cash is always preferred.

ATM's / cash point machines in Prague
Prague city centre : As in other European capitals, Prague has cash point machines spread throughout the city. Use Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Visa debit & American Express cards to withdraw money from the ATM's of most Czech & International banks.

Prague airport : as you exit customs, cash point machines are located to the left of the exit doors, inside the airport terminal building - Prague Airport information.

Currency exchange in Prague
Our top tip for currency exchange in Prague is at the tourist bureau de change "Xchange", on the corner of Kaprova and Maiselova streets, near the Old Town Square.

Apart from Xchange, Czech & International banks are the best places for tourists to change money. Most offer good exchange rates and low commissions. These can be found in various locations in Prague, but are most prevalent in and around Wenceslas Square and en-route to the Old Town Square.

As a last resort, Prague has many currency exchange offices located in small booths. Offers of 0% commission and confusing signs can mask a poor exchange rate. Ask what the total amount you will receive is, before handing any money over.

American Express
Tourists with American Express travelers' cheques can redeem them at the American Express office in central Prague: Wenceslas Square 56, Prague 1.
